Is Working from Home an Option for you?

In this day and age traditional jobs are fading fast. The “9 to 5” is on the way out, and employees are being given much more freedom to create their own schedules and handle their work load at their own pace. As working from home becomes more normal, many employees are excited to begin starting their day in their bath robes instead of stuck in traffic, but working from home isn’t always the best option for everyone’s job description and personality. If you’re considering working from home, here are a few things you might want to consider:

Distractions – Working from home presents a whole new set of distractions that you may not realize. For parents of young children, working from home can be extremely difficult, since children don’t understand the boundaries between work and play. Even if you aren’t a parent of a young child, you my notice yourself being tempted to turn on the television or even stop and go through your mail or pay your bills, which can lead to extended work days and a lack of division between your work and home life. If you’re easily distracted you may want to begin by working from a coffee shop or a library.

Equipment – Another important factor in deciding about working from home is the equipment. Can you get by with a simple laptop and internet connection? Or would you need a full office set-up with filing systems, glass whiteboards, headsets and all the other office equipment? Could you choose certain days to be out of the office and still use the equipment as you need it? These are all important questions to ask yourself and your boss.

Co-workers – Working from home is one of the most liberating and relaxing ways to earn money, but it can be extremely lonely. A very important question to ask yourself is how much interaction do you need on a daily basis? Are you an introvert or an extrovert? Do you feel energized and ready to work around people or do you work better on your own? This may require a bit of trial and error and ideally you may be able to mix your schedule up; working some days from the comfort of your own home and others with the full stress and fun of the office atmosphere.

One of the most important things to realize about working from home is that it’s a personalized preference; some jobs are much easier to do from home, and some personalities work better from home.
